Karelin met Rulon Gardner of the USA in the Finals and did lose now this was Alexander's 3rd Match of the Day and Rulon's 2nd Match of the Day it would have seemed as though they could have scheduled this better to make it fair.  Alexander retired immediately and got on with his life ever since being a Member of the Russian Parliament, the Duma.
