On Sunday, May 5, 1918, 13 Men drowned at Ocean Beach, San Diego, due to unusual Rip-Currents so Violent that only 3 of the 13 bodies were ever recovered. 11 of these were Soldiers and Sailors stationed at Camp Kearny, amongst them was Henry P. Hanson who saved 5 lives before dying in the Attempt to save a 6th. From this Tragedy was developed the San Diego Lifeguard Service. Commemorating this Valor and Loss is a descriptive Plaque with a bronze-statue The Lifeguard
